HOME WORK HELP!!!!
Homework is a necessity in any intermediate classroom! Homework can help consolidate concepts,to enhance ability and to increase confidence with the material taught in class. It is a reality the farther a student progresses in their educational career the more homework is necessary for their success. GOOD NEWS!!! The SCDSB has purchased accounts for students to have access to one on one tutors for any concept Sunday to Thursday from 5:30pm to 9:30pm!!! This is a huge relief to parents who struggle to help students at home and for students who are often lost without support. All students are aware of their login as their school ID and password. Each had their accounts set up in class and have accessed the resources available on the site. We encourage you to have your child show you some features of the site tonight! No more excuses to unfinished homework because they "DON'T GET IT!" . . go sign in and chat with your personal TUTOR for FREE!!!! Click the icon to go to the site. How well is my child doing?? As an intermediate teacher for the last 10 years, the biggest frustration parents communicate to me they have with their teen is that they don't often share all the details of their learning with them. ESPECIALLY when it comes to tests, quizzes and assessments!! This leads parents to feel out of the loop when it comes to their child's education. I have attempted to bridge that communication gap over the years in a number of ways; daily agendas, assessments folders that went home regularly, blog posts, Instagram photos and recently, Twitter posts. All have been helpful in one way or another to raise parents engagement and awareness of classroom happenings. This year, I undertook a new project in hopes of really connecting with parents. I have been using an app in class to document student assessments through photographs. Seesaw empowers students to independently document what they are learning at school. Students can “show what they know” using photos, videos, drawings, text, PDFs, and links. Every test, quiz or project is digitally filed in each students folder, from there parents can go in and check themselves on student progress throughout the year. I often update twitter to say when assessments have been added to the folder for parents to check. I have received positive feedback from parents using this system. They are appreciative that they can be more apart of students marks and that there are less surprises come report card time. I IMPLORE parents of my class to check, talk and hold their student accountable for their work! This week your son or daughter will be bringing home an instructions sheet that details how parents can get online to view their child's folder. If you have ANY questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Check out the link here to learn more! Does this Logo mean anything to you? Have you seen it before? Do you know what depression is? How about feeling so sad and mad you don’t know if you should scream or just cry. Mental health is something worth talking about! Bell Let’s Talk Day is on January 25, 2017.On Bell Let’s Talk Day, Bell will donate 5¢ more towards mental health initiatives in Canada, by counting every text, call, tweet, Instagram post, Facebook video view and Snapchat
Public speaking is a feared component of any intermediate classroom. The mere thought of getting up in front of peers to convey a message strikes panic in most teens. Funny enough though, ask them their opinion on a topic they are interested in and they have no porblem spewing every thought, wish, idea and fact they know in exaggerated passionate paragraphic detail . . . but ask them to form structured sentenses outloud and oh no!! Our learning goal with this next unit, is to increase students confidence in speaking publicly and to communicate articulately their thoughts and ideas. I know they can, and its this knowdlege of how well they will do at the end of this unit, that makes me giddy just thinking about it. Trust me Over the course of the next three weeks, students will explore a variety of topics and narrow down what interests them the most. They will be taught how to organize their thoughts and ideas into a cohesive presentation, with engaging hooks, interesting tidbits and humourous inserts. We will also practice public speaking strategies and tips to enhance their final performance.
A New Year is upon us and with it brings new opportunities and adventures in Copelandclass. This week we will be looking back at 2018 and the good that came with it and exploring what New Years Resolutions mean, and making some realistic goals for this upcoming year. This week, our spelling words will reflect this festive theme. Also a really neat art project will be as explosive as reflective. Firework Art Click the above link to see the project the class will create on Friday.
The Bulletin in the hallway is a colorful display of our NewYearsFocus. It displays our awesome writing samples as well as our beautiful art. Great Job folks!
