Halloween on a school day, is a teachers worst nightmare. As teachers, we have to make the best of it. This year I attempted to incorporate some fun, engaging and challenging activities that I felt would get the students in a spooky mood.

This week we have started our Narrative Writing unit. We have explored Elements of a Short story and Plot Structure. I plan to read a variety of short stories and have students identify the various elements, starting with the story below. This series is pretty unique set-up.
1) Watch and listen to the video introduction online.
2) Read the story.
3) Watch the conclusion of the story online.

I have to give props to a really awesome resource I found on TPT.com. I am really trying to incorporate more real life, project based math activities into my program. The package I found was really fun! Students are engaged by the whimsical ideas while practicing place Value, Operations (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division), Money (Decimals), Problem Solving, Data and Graphing and Factors and Multiples. Now thats what I call SPOOKTACULAR!!!
CopelandClass has been LOVING the incorporation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math challenges in the classroom this year. In keeping with the theme of HALLOWEEN our challenge was "EYEBALL CATAPULT". Using Popsicle Sticks, a muffin liner and a pingpong ball, students develop a contraption to launch the Monster eyeball.
Halloween is a fun yearly festive event but how did it originate? Why do we disguise ourselves and collect candy door to door? Where did these traditions come from? The students in CopelandClass will be watching a Halloween documentary on Monday that explains the history and traditions of this spooky night.
