The students have been working for the past month on specific reading strategies of Inferring, Visualizing, Connecting and Synthesizing. This months project was to create a Book Board showcasing the key elements of their novel. Students did a great job showcases many literature gems! Check out their book boards below. Students have been working hard this last month on their Independent Reading Projects. Students selected a novel of their choice and then chose a combination of tasks they wanted to complete from a social media & creative arts menu. It always amazes me the talent that exists in these guys. I have included a gallery of some of the hardcopy project samples. Many other students created Vines, commercials, movie trailers etc. When I have a second to breathe, I will look into loading some of these onto my Youtube page.
Reading is incrediably important part of your life! Studies have shown that reading for just 2 mins everynight can make a world of difference in a persons success and learning. Take a look at the chart above, reading for 20 minutes puts people in the 90th percentile (above 90% of those in their age bracket). Reading everyday has always been proven to make people better spellers, increase vocabulary, enhance understanding and awareness and make them more well rounded individuals. I expect my students to read AT LEAST 20 minutes everynight. No Excuses!!! I rarely assign a lot of homework, aside from the occasional time needed to finish a project or work assigned in class. As such, I expect students to be reading on a regular basis. I have many options in the classroom library that are available to check out and I am always willing to offer a good recommendation. The best spot to check out is our school library, Mrs Brown has an absolutley fantastic selection of books available and if she doesn't have it, she will get it!! Another option is owning books yourself and creating a personal library. Chapters/indigo and amazon are great ways to buy books as well as at the Scholastic Book Fair that happens three times a year. In my intermediate class, we will have many opportunities to share our reading through a variety of book talks, reports, presentations and showcases. The students who succeed the most in these assignments are the ones who ensure they have many options to pull from. Get a book...or seven, and start reading! |
